We need your help! We need your support! This is our Crowd-funding Initiative for the artist-community of Karnabal Festival 2017!
Why support Karnabal?
Because Karnabal aims to contribute to social development and in reimagining and materialising new culture through socially engaged performances. We challenge artists to collaborate and work with communities.
Because Karnabal supports the creation and development of new works of independent (and mostly) emerging artists by providing resources of space, platforms for presentation, dramaturgical guidance, audience engagement, workshops, works-in-progress exchanges and preview performances.
Because Karnabal supports the development of artistic practices, the discovery and creation of new modes of performance-making.
Because Karnabal is Blank-Ticketed: every performance is open to anybody and everybody. Audiences are given Blank-Tickets instead of fixed price tickets. This is a social experiment where we ask audiences to determine the value (ie. cost, price) of the exchange, based on their perceived value (ie. importance) of the performance, while also considering their economic capacity. Socialised! This seeks to develop a deeper relationship between the audience and artist, as they become liable and accountable to each other. This is a beautiful risk all the artists are taking, a risk worth diving into. We aim for genuine audience development and education. We want audiences to be conscious and active stakeholders of artistic and cultural development.
Because Karnabal is the only platform where artists can fail fast to learn faster. Karnabal is a community of act-ors pro-actively exchanging thoughts and resources beyond the festival. Karnabal artists create without the pressure of “commercial success”. If anything, the pressure comes from the responsibility to create works that are meaningful to the communities they engage.
Because Karnabal is also the alternative education for artists. Learning by doing in mind, a series of workshops, conferences, interviews and video works are programmed by Karnabal to brew discourse, to map and document contemporary practice, to advance thought, to learn from each other, to imagine and re-imagine performance, living, connecting and being together in this world.
Because most works in Karnabal are socially-engaged works that can not be sold or supported as products. Some performances focus on the immaterial: experience, empathy, compassion, journey towards discovery. We need your support for artists to continue doing non-commercial works with communities.
Because there is limited support (almost none) for independent artists working outside big performance companies. To self-produce is very challenging.
Because we want to keep doing, keep inspiring, keep making, keep questioning, keep destroying, keep creating with you, with many communities, here and around the country, inside and outside the Philippines.

Because Karnabal Festival is artist-run and volunteer-run. Even the festival directors, head curators, production managers, and designers are all volunteers. Yes. Para sa paglikha. Para sa kapwa artista. Para sa bayan.

Food for our volunteers and artists! This year we aim to provide food for all participating artists and festival volunteers! Plus free-flowing coffee (and candies!) to perk up the spirits of our joyful and passionate souls.
Publication! Your support will be used to publish the Karnabal 2016 Publication / Independent Zine featuring all festival artists and their works. Articles discussing relevant issues on independent contemporary performance practices are also included. This will be an important resource for artists and communities.

Bag-danas! We would like to give our hardworking artists and volunteers Festival Bag-danas (Bags that turn into bandanas and v.v.) as token and pasasalamat for continuing creating performances no matter what.
Additional Technical Support for our performance spaces! So that artists won’t need to shoulder expenses for additional technical equipment necessary for their performances, Karnabal aims to provide complete lighting, sounds, and ventilation equipment needed in many of the shows and events.
