Issa Manalo Lopez tells the story of/behind her recent works, mapping personal, social and performance histories through I: BEYOND THE STAGE.
“I” is an interactive solo performance that premiered in KARNABAL 2016. It maps the artist’s life experiences through re-constructed epiphanies of gestures, movement, artifacts, sound recordings, photographs, and dialogue. A few months later, she pursued the development of a new work entitled “Colonize(d): A Duet on Identity and Intersectionality” with American art-ivist Siobhan O’ Loughlin, created amidst the landscape of Trump’s America, Duterte’s war on drugs and blatant historical revisionism.
From her family narratives inside prison cells during Martial Law to her open field telling in the streets of EDSA, 30 years later, denouncing the revisionism of history with the burial of a dictator as a hero, the artist returns onstage mapping personal and collective telling of history and trajectories through performance.
